New UCR Stats vs NPMSRP Stats

The US DOJ and FBI released their Unified Crime Reporting “Crime in the United States” 2008 statistics on Monday so it seems like I have to update the comparison data I use to determine how US general population crime rates stack up against law enforcement crime rates as determined by our NPMSRP.

While I was doing that, however, I did take care to note that UCR homicide statistics only include non-negligent homicides while I had been including all homicides for the comparable police statistics so I’ve modified that statistic to only include incidents where a death resulted in what would be considered a non-negligent incident comparatively. (i.e. a death occurring in the process of unwarranted use of force, excessive force, assault, domestic battery, sexual assault, etc… while excluding auto accidents, DUI incidents, etc…)

In any case, here’s how the new statistics for 2008 compare with the statistics we’ve tracked in the last 5 months:

Violent Crime Aggregate:
General Population – 454.5 of every 100k -or- 1 of every 220 -or- 0.45% of the population
Police Population – 364.9 of every 100k -or- 1 of every 274 -or- 0.36% of the population
*note: police data excludes charges of robbery

Assault
General Population – 274.8 of every 100k -or- 1 of every 363.9 -or- 0.27% of the population
Police Population – 259.8 of every 100k -or- 1 of every 384.8 -or- 0.26% of the population

Sexual Assault
General Population – 29.3 of every 100k -or- 1 of every 3413.0 -or- 0.03% of the population
Police Population – 100.3 of every 100k -or- 1 of every 996.6 -or- 0.10% of the population

Homicide
General Population – 5.4 of every 100k -or- 1 of every 18,518 -or- 0.01% of the population
Police Population – 37.4 of every 100k -or- 1 of every 3,674.8 -or- 0.04% of the population
